Product Spotlight: Soapnut Shampoo Bars

What?

Shampoo in solid form. The main ingredient is soapnuts. This fruit shell contains a natural soap that lathers up when it comes into contact with water and carries away dirt.

Why?

What with shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, hair dye and all those other specialist beauty products, UK households are sending an awful lot of plastic to landfill or for recycling (see our waste hierarchy blog entry for more info about waste disposal priorities!). On top of that, the product you're washing down the drain often isn't very eco-friendly. Eek!

Instead, switch to a shampoo that comes in solid form. It works just as well if not better than your standard branded bottled shampoo and, with a range of flavours available, there’s sure to be a version whose ingredients suit you to a T.

Hair types

The manufacturers recommend the following flavours based on your hair type:

Dry hair: Coconutty, Hemp & Patchouli, Rhassoul Mud, Beer & Bay

Oily hair: Coconutty, Lemon & Avocado, Beer & Bay, Rhassoul Mud

Normal hair: any flavour you like!

Thick/curly hair: Lemon & Avocado, Beer & Bay, Rhassoul Mud

Where?

Perched on a swanky soap dish in your shower or next to your bath! You can also take your shampoo bar to the gym, on holiday or on business trips in a travel soap dish or simply in the cotton bag it comes in (don’t forget to compost this when you’re done with it, rather than throwing it away).

How?

You can either wet the bar and lather it up in your hands, or rub it straight onto your hair before massaging it in. Rinse it out well and, if you feel you need it, condition with an apple cider vinegar hair rinse (don’t worry, you won’t smell of vinegar!).

It generally takes a week or so for all of the residue from your old shampoo to get washed away and your head to adjust its level of oil production. Stick with it and you’ll soon be used to your new shampoo bar.
